Tennessee Lady Vols freshman Mercedes Russell is starting to get the hang of the college game.
Russell was named the SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week after scoring 12 points, hauling in seven rebounds, blocking five shots and even getting two assists in Tennessee’s 110-42 win over Lipscomb.
Russell’s contributions helped the Lady Vols register their highest point total since 2011 and their largest margin of victory since 2005. He shot blocking was a factor in Lipscomb scoring just 13 second half points.
The freshman from Portland is becoming more comfortable at the college level, hitting 17 of 27 field goal attempts over the past four games.
The Lady Vols host 16th ranked LSU Thursday night. Candace Parker’s jersey will be retired in a pregame ceremony.
